After Luce left, I stayed at the bar and got very drunk. I stumbled to the phone booth and made an incoherent late-night call to Sally , making both her and her grandmother angry. I think I then tried to make a date with the lounge singer, an attractive woman named Valencia. When that failed, I tried, with not much more success, to make a date with the hat-check girl.
I decided to walk to the duck pond in Central Park to see if the ducks are still around. Along the way, I became quite upset when dropped and broke the record I had bought for Phoebe. I had splashed water in my hair, at the hotel, trying to sober up, my hair began to freeze and fill with icicles. At the duck pond, I worried about catching pneumonia and imagined my funeral. I missed Allie’s funeral, because I was in the hospital after breaking the garage windows with my bare hands. I remember going to Allie’s grave with my parents. I felt disgusted and sad, because the idea of placing flowers on the grass that covers the stomachs of the dead disturbs me.
I wanted to talk to Phoebe, and I was running low on money, so i decided to risk going home. I expected my parents to be asleep, which would mean I could just sneak in, speak with Phoebe, and then leave without being heard. I left the park and began the long walk home.
